Leaders Stepping Up!
by Kim Schweitzer

I worked with an excellent leader who asserted his managerial courage & utilized open communication on a day to day basis - when the conversations were easy - job well done - and more importantly when there were some bumps in the road.
He nailed things early and often with his team - all levels. He supported his Directors to have weekly short chats with their reports to ensure that they had dedicated opportunities to chat about what went well and areas of improvement. Open feedback and assessment were part of the team's culture. The team grew to be very comfortable with feedback and TRUST developed up and down the reporting chain.
We had several separations which were decisions made by the executive team on low performance. I'm very proud of this team - We hired the core group of 35- now up to 125 - in early 2005 and they have had zero turn over by the employees! They have had 5 promotions!
As HR professionals, we all know, people don't usually leave a company - they leave their managers.
